Meal Stretcher Monday: Shredded Cheese

We use shredded cheese pretty often - mozzarella in baked ziti, on pizza, cheddar on chili or in burritos, etc.

I have noticed that there appears to be a shredding fee.  Look:

Shredded: 8 ounces for $2.28.

Un-shredded: 32 ounces for $7.98.

So, if I buy the block and shred it, it's like getting 4 of those 8-ounce bags for $1.99 each.

But, isn't shredding cheese by hand a pain the @$$?  Why yes.  Yes it is.

Or it would be...if I hadn't STALKED THAT FOOD PROCESSOR!

Wheeeeeeeeeee!

Awwww yeeeeaaaaah.  Two minutes worth of processing, and I now have a big fat bag of shredded cheese in my freezer.

Cheap trick: put a tablespoon of flour into the bag and give it a good shake.  It will keep the cheese from sticking together!

Happy eating.

  1. actually, I do think cheese is one of the things you don't need to pay more for shredding. The issue here is that you are comparing a large block of cheese to a small bag of shredded cheese. I actually read an article about this in consumer reports some months ago. The charge for shredding should be minimal if anything.

    1. Understandable, but I have not managed to find larger (8 cup) bags of shredded cheese without needing a membership to one of the wholesale warehouses (BJ's, Price Club, Costco, etc.).
